常见的铣刀涂层有TiN、TiC和TiAIN,其他超硬氮/碳化物的涂层也有应用,但不太普遍,PVD金刚石刀具涂层铣刀也可以进行重磨和再层,在再涂层过程中,铣刀应被保护,以避免临界表面的损伤,由于TiAIN层铣刀比TiN涂层铣刀的切削速度更高、也更耐高温,所以如果需要,可以除铣刀上的TiN涂层,重新涂上TiAIN涂层,获得性能很好的新的涂层铣刀,而且,与重新开发新铣刀相比,从旧铣刀上除TiN涂层并涂上TiAIN涂层所花的时间要短很多。
高速钢铣刀的切削刃也可以进行多次涂层,在切削力导致的粘附问题变得突出之前,铣刀可进行几次少量再涂层而不需除旧涂层,尽管PVD涂层具有有利于金属切削的残余压应力,但这种压力会随涂层厚度的增加而增大,并且在超过某个固定的限值后涂层将开始出现分层现象,在未除旧涂层而进行再涂层时,铣刀的外径上就增加了一个厚度,对于钻头而言,就意味着所钻的孔径在变大,因此要考虑涂层附加的厚度对铣刀外径的影响。
一个合金钻头可在不除旧涂层的情况下再涂层5~10次,但要考虑涂层厚度带来的影响,只要涂层厚度不成为问题,那么再涂层、重磨的铣刀可能比原来的性能很好。
